Starting at the main train station, discover sculptures, murals, and Eberswalde’s independent arts scene on a walking tour of the city. Sculptor Gudrun Sailer, who lives in the city and documented public art there after the fall of the Berlin Wall, will guide you to art sites in the city center.
Spiced with personal memories, she’ll tell you how the artworks and “art in architecture” came to be installed, how culture developed in the city’s community, and how the “Jazz in E.” music festival came into being. After lunch at a restaurant, we’ll head to the Paul Wunderlich House: Gudrun Sailer will guide you through the collection of the internationally renowned painter and sculptor. Paul Wunderlich, a style-defining master of fantastic realism and lithography, was born in Eberswalde.
The tour’s final destination is the historic Haus Schwärzetal, the last of the city’s eight former cultural centers. There, you’ll experience the opening of the Provinziale Film Festival.
Even before the doors open to other festivalgoers, the festival organizers will tell you, over cake or soup in the cozy festival club, how the festival—centered on the themes of home, landscape, city, and countryside—came to be. The opening documentary ends at 7:45 p.m. Those who wish can watch the films from the second block starting at 8 p.m.
