Nana lives as a teenager on a remote volcanic island in Cape Verde, a place everyone wants to leave. Her mother Nia, who suffers from a mysterious illness, left the island shortly after she was born. When Nana falls ill with a high fever, she is sent to the foot of a volcano for treatment. There she encounters a world between dream and reality. Years later, when Nana is a teenager, her mother returns and suggests that she accompany her to America. Although this film has a documentary feel, it is a feature film. As it explores key questions of our film festival in a delicate yet direct manner, we are showing it outside of our competition.

From the Oder to the Havel, from the Spree to the Dosse. The federal state of Brandenburg and the city-state of Berlin in the middle are very diverse in terms of landscape, history, and inhabitants. And how is and was the traditional way of speaking here? “We were looking for the much-praised and also much-maligned Berlin dialect and visited people who still speak Low German, which has had a major influence on Brandenburg,” says director Gerald Backhaus. Together with cameraman Martin König, he explored the phenomenon of the original language in Berlin and Brandenburg in the documentary film “Von Icke bis Platt” (From Icke to Platt). The screening will be followed by a discussion with Gerald Backhaus.
