100 JAHRE FEUERWEHR BLIESDORF

What a milestone birthday! As a gift, 12 children and teens from Bliesdorf decided to produce an animated film for and about their fire department. For weeks, they met regularly at the “Heimatstube Bliesdorf” cultural heritage center, interviewed neighbors, collected stories, and gathered all the information they needed. During the Easter break, the time had finally come: Over the course of four days, with the help of workshop leaders Johanna Ickert and Mathilde Scholz, they brought the stories and anecdotes to life, animated them using stop-motion techniques, and recorded their voiceovers. Of course, the story about the time the cow had to be rescued from the pool was especially popular. A lot can happen in 100 years!

Through its “Landscape Education” program, the Oderbruch Museum Altranft takes a unique approach to cultural and regional education. Landscape is not just nature, but a shaped living environment full of work, history, culture, and everyday life. Young people and adults explore their living environment directly on site and through conversations with the people who live and work there. These explorations are incorporated into creative, media-based, or hands-on projects.

DAS GEHEIMNIS DES WASSERS IM ODERBRUCH

Pumping stations, local history museums, churches, archaeological sites, and architectural landmarks—fascinating places that bring a region’s cultural heritage to life. The project “Youth Films Cultural Heritage—Places in the Oderbruch” is creating a film series featuring designated cultural heritage sites in the region. Over the course of a project week, children and teens can learn about and experiment with filmmaking techniques, shoot their own scenes, conduct interviews, and finally edit everything together to create a short film, culminating in a premiere celebration. A film about the importance of water in the Oderbruch and the Neutornow pumping station, created by students from the Neuenhagen Island Elementary School (Bad Freienwalde).

The “FILMKNACK—Youth Film Work Between Everyday Life and Film Festivals” project was launched in 2023. It was our response to a lively exchange with the East German Savings Banks Foundation, and we took the opportunity to make a fresh start in youth film work, which had been one of the most significant gaps in our work. Initially, we considered leveraging the appeal of social media platforms to motivate young people to create their own films. As the project progressed, it quickly became clear that we could not capitalize on this appeal, as the platforms go to great lengths to create their own user engagement. However, we were able to capitalize on the high level of interest from educators and students to establish our youth film work within the context of classroom instruction and project days at schools.
